THE INDICATORS OF HEALTH

Amphibians of Africa

The study of amphibians of Africa has moved beyond simple biology; these creatures have become our most sensitive “early warning systems” for environmental change. Amphibians are widely recognized as bioindicators, biological species used to monitor the health of an environment. Because they live a “double life” (aquatic and terrestrial) and possess highly permeable skin, they are the first to react to pollutants, temperature shifts, and habitat fragmentation.
